As a wedding videographer who has had the privilege of capturing countless weddings, I have witnessed the power of heartfelt vows firsthand. The exchange of promises between partners is a cherished moment that sets the tone for their journey together.
In this article, I will share eight valuable tips for writing unique and personalised wedding vows. I firmly believe that personalised vows add a special touch to the ceremony, making it an authentic reflection of your love story and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
1. Speak in your own language
When writing your vows, remember that they are meant for your partner, not the crowd. Use your own voice and express your deepest emotions. This is your chance to speak directly from the heart and let your partner know how he/she truly makes you feel.
2. Keep it concise
Vows should be heartfelt but also concise. Aim for a length of 2-4 minutes to maintain the audience's engagement and ensure that the ceremony flows smoothly.
3. Practice aloud
The old school saying applies: practice makes perfect. Read your vows aloud multiple times to familiarise yourself with the flow and pacing. This will help you deliver them confidently and sincerely on your special day.
4. Embrace the power of pauses
Mark the *pauses* in your vows, allowing yourself to take breaths and create moments of reflection. Avoid reading out the word "pause" itself, as it may break the natural flow of your delivery and also make your audience go 'huh'. So, embrace the power of silence to let your words sink in.
5. Make it clean and readable
Ensure that your vows are clean and easy to read. Consider printing them out on a beautiful piece of paper, or even writing them in a vow book. This will prevent any fumbling or distractions during the ceremony. The last thing you want is to stare at your own handwriting and can't figure out what you wrote.
6. Avoid Googling your vows
While seeking inspiration is natural, I advise against Googling pre-written vows. Your vows should be a genuine expression of your love and unique bond. Let them come from your own experiences and feelings rather than sounding like something out of a movie.
7. Tread lightly on inside jokes
While inside jokes can be endearing, be mindful not to go overboard. Remember that your vows will be heard by family and friends as well. Strike a balance between personal anecdotes and inclusivity.
8. Opt for writing or printing instead of smartphones
To maintain the intimacy and authenticity of the moment, it's best to write or print out your vows. This allows you to fully connect with your words and avoid any potential distractions or technical mishaps that smartphones may bring.
Bonus Tip: Set the mood with music
Consider playing some light, romantic music in the background while writing your vows. It can help inspire emotions and create a conducive atmosphere for reflection and creativity. Check out this curated playlist for inspiration: Spotify: Romantic Wedding Jam
